“Won’t they kick us out? We aren’t supporters or contributors,” Xandie whispered to Lila as they entered the conference room.

“The more bodies they have, the more suckers they can get to donate.” Lila pointed to two empty chairs at the back of the room. “Head there, at least we’re close to the back if we need to make a quick getaway.”

Using her elbows, Xandie mowed a path across to the seats Lila had indicated. “Isn’t this a fire hazard? So many people squeezed into one room?”

Lila scooted in next to Xandie. “That’s why they moved the meeting from Point Muse Academy hall to the conference room at Point Muse Springs Resort. Plus, with Braun in hiding, and the Fire Chief out of town, no one is here to care.”

Poor bear shifter. The look on his face when Xandie had released him and Colin from the wardrobe yesterday had been priceless. Both the shifter and the pug had worn a covering of silver goo. In other words, baby Griffin drool. Apparently, Albert, the baby Griffin, was teething. Not an issue normally, but when you had the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle, the amount of saliva you generated daily could fill a small wading pool. “Any sign of Jasper yet?”

“Not yet. But I’m sure that nosy po-po isn’t far away. He probably figures we’ll lead him to Braun.”

“Not if Elspeth has anything to do with it. Apparently, she has professional pride on the line. Whatever that means.”

Scanning the room, Lila nudged Xandie and pointed to the podium where Alastair Matthews stood, whispering with an employee. “Means she’s bored and looking for mayhem.”

Xandie pretended to glance around the room casually. The good old politician looked a tad discombobulated as he whispered fiercely to his aide. “That looks intense. Don’t you think?”

“My husband’s upset. Some of our contributors are making noises about withdrawing support. They’re concerned about the rumors.” Esme Matthews stood beside Xandie’s chair, a hand tightly clenched on the back of it.

Matthews’ wife looked stunning in a pale suit, her raven-black hair perfectly coiffed, and that same blank gaze on her face. What wasn’t normal was the slightly frantic look of panic that flickered for a moment across her face.

“Are you okay?”

Esme blew a breath out and relaxed her death grip on Xandie’s chair. “Sorry, I don’t do well with crowds. I’m better outside.”

Xandie reached into a bag and dragged out a packet of papers. “The Library had this waiting for me when I got back. It’s additional information on oak tree and Dryad propagation. An update on the information you received earlier.”

Life flared in Esme’s eyes and the panic dissipated in a heartbeat. “Thank you so much.” She carefully took the papers and hugged them to her chest. “Once I escape the campaign trail, I can get started straight away.”

“You don’t enjoy campaigning?” Being surrounded constantly by political groupies must get old quickly.

Esme smiled slightly at Xandie’s words. “I’m a homebody. A nature lover. Alastair prefers the limelight and normally handles all the political side of things himself.
